3.5mm audio. TRS vs TRRS
Count the rings on the plug. That tells you what it carries.
Connector types
- TRS. Three segments. Tip, Ring, Sleeve. Stereo audio only.
- TRRS. Four segments. Adds microphone channel. Used by headsets.
- TS. Two segments. Mono. Used by instruments and older gear.
Compatibility
- TRS plug in TRRS jack. Audio works. Mic does not.
- TRRS plug in TRS jack. Audio works. Mic ignored.
- CTIA vs OMTP. Two TRRS wiring standards. Most modern devices use CTIA.
Common fixes
- One ear silent. Check cable near plug for damage.
- Mic not detected. May need TRRS splitter to separate mic and audio.
- Static noise. Clean the jack with compressed air.
