DisplayPort vs HDMI
DP handles higher refresh rates. HDMI is more common on TVs.
When DisplayPort wins
- High refresh monitors. 144Hz, 240Hz gaming displays.
- Daisy chaining. DP supports multi-monitor chains.
- Adaptive sync. FreeSync and G-Sync work best over DP.
Adapter rules
- DP to HDMI works with a passive adapter for basic signals.
- HDMI to DP needs an active adapter. More expensive.
- USB-C Alt Mode can carry DP signal natively.
Version comparison
- DP 1.2. 4K at 60Hz. Common on older monitors.
- DP 1.4. 4K at 120Hz, 8K at 60Hz with DSC.
- DP 2.1. 8K at 60Hz without DSC. Future standard.
