Dock and hub checklist

Before you buy

• Check if your USB-C port supports video output. Not all do.
• Check if your USB-C port supports power delivery. Needed for charging through dock.
• Check the watt rating. Dock pass-through must match your charger.

Hub vs dock

• Hub. Portable. Usually bus-powered. Fewer ports.
• Dock. Stationary. Has its own power supply. More ports.
• Thunderbolt dock. Highest bandwidth. Most external displays supported.

Display limits

• USB-C with DP Alt Mode. Usually one external display.
• Thunderbolt 3. Up to two 4K displays.
• Thunderbolt 4. Guaranteed two 4K or one 8K display.
• DisplayLink docks use software drivers. Lower performance.
